I know it's spring already but today up at WH2O it was still winter. It felt like everyone was there to say their goodbyes. Though the weather was chilled (and snowing), the vibe was warm and fuzzy. Plenty were hittin' the Blast for their last run this season. Others were checkin' their speed in the pass-holders race...

Joe has a Blast on a deep, deep day

Sunday at Whitewater Ski and Board Club was very, very fun because I skied The Blast for my very first time, after camp with my Dad. I was very sad because it was my last day with my coach Jeremy. I have hockey on the next two weekends so I can't be there. Jeremy taught me a lot of things and showed me a lot of new runs I never heard of. I was a little confused sometimes, but now I know the trails, so I can go there and rip it up. The snow on Sunday was very powdery and it was kind of hard to ski in. It was up to my hips. Jeremy took us on Igniter, Nugget two times, Gold Pan, Upper Concentrator Trees, Tram Line and Sluice Box Trees were it was really deep. I liked Whitewater Ski and Board Club. Jeremy was very nice to all of us in the camp. I'd like to go back next year.

So today, my fifth time at Whitewater Ski and Board Club, was a fun day. Before camp I got to go skiing with my cousin Myles from Calgary. We skied together for Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning before Adventure Camp started.

Whitewater Ruined My Life

As I sit here in my high-rise apartment in Calgary, with the Snow Report not even trying to hide on my Favourites bar in Internet Explorer, I come to realize that Whitewater Ski Resort has single-handedly ruined my life. It's difficult to concentrate on daily tasks as I find myself constantly concocting strategies of how and when I can get back to Nelson asap.

New Whitewater Lift Towers Toward Completion

Thanks to one of British Columbia’s biggest helicopters and a heap of hustle, Canadian ski history was made at Whitewater Ski Resort, near Nelson B.C., this week. The crew from Fernie-based Summit Lift Company launched the final and most impressive stage of the 2,042 vertical-foot chair’s installation Tuesday and Wednesday.

We have had a lot of inquiries lately about the progress of the Glory Ridge Chair installation in the area known as backside. We are happy to report that everything is cruising along as planned and we have poured the last footings with the towers expected to be raised at the end of the month.

Family Firsts and Middle Aged Memories

It’s that time of year the Pagans and Druids used to refer to as “Imbolc” — the heart of mid-winter. Fact is, after a triad of ski-family firsts over the last weekend, all resulting in considerable Ibuprofen and icepacking for ol’ dad, a guy can’t help but feel more mid-life than Medieval.

Racers coming to Whitewater

Coming this Sunday, February 14th, The Whitewater Ski Team will be hosting 180 racers competing in the West Kootenay Nancy Greene Ski League. Racers between the ages of 4-13 will run slalom and GS courses, competing against team members from surrounding areas. The Kimberley North Star Racers have a team of twenty kids coming for the event. There are 72 kids on the Whitewater team, seeing a jump from 21 kids just two years ago.

Avalanche Awareness for Kootenay Youth

The first year of the AABBS Society has turned out to be a great success. The Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries Society is a non profit group that provides avalanche awareness training for youth in the kootenays. One and three day training courses have been provided to nearly 100 kids over the '09-2010 season.

Whitewater torched!

It was more like a classic Kootenay party with dancing hippy kids and snowbank firepits rather than an IOC-sanctioned event, but the Olympic Gear-UP Winter Carnival was a great time nevertheless. There was no corporate sponsorship putting a damper on the festivities- just an open invitation for locals to celebrate our own version of the games.
