40 Years Young: Tribute to Whitewater's Ski History

Nelson might be a small ski town, but when the community pulls together, it works wonders.

That's the premise behind "40 Years Young", a film celebrating Whitewater's 40th anniversary this season. This premise demonstrated itself in the live premiere: locals poured into Mike?? Pub at the Hume Hotel until it was standing room only, all there to support the hill they love.

Cheers erupted with the opening scene and continued throughout the film as familiar faces took their turn on the screen. Current-day staff talked about the magic of Whitewater; a magic that began in the 1970s with the resort?? pioneers and their somewhat devil-may-care attitude when it came to living up their glory days. 40 Years Young

It?? a pure love of skiing that brought the people together in the ??70s to make Whitewater a reality, and a community togetherness that kept the project pushing forward, even in the face of setbacks.

Those glory days haven?? died, but have been passed down from generation to generation. Today?? skiers might be descendents of WH2O?? pioneers or seasonal transplants assimilating the attitude into their approach to Whitewater ?? either way, the resort retains a rambunctious playfulness.

Back at the premiere, as the current season?? skiers kept their eyes glued on the screen, it was apparent that they were just as proud of their hill?? history and achievements as if they were the ones who made it happen. Because, in a small way, every person who leaves their tracks on Whitewater?? powder is part of that story.

Happy Birthday to our corner of the Powder Highway. Here?? to skiing uncrowded powder, sharing a chair ride with friends and neighbours, and a community spirit that lives for 40 more. 40 Years Young
